TRAINING ON SUSTAINABLE USE OF WATER HYACINTH AS BIO-COOKING GEL FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION IN ALESA ELEME.
 

1.0 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

As part of its support for Climate Justice and Green Development, The Global Green Grant Supported CEDSI Nigeria to carry out strategic activities. The stakeholders Engagement Forum on the sustainable use of Water Hyacinth as Bio-cooking gel for sustainable protection of the environment facilitated by Center for Development Support Initiatives this was held at Alesa Town Hall. Participants were drawn from various Women Interest groups and communities in Eleme Local Government Area. This was preceded by a baseline survey across 50 households and 500 people.

The cardinal objectives of the Training as adequately highlighted in the main body of the report were met with the full participation and involvement of all Trainees as well as outcomes of plenary presentations.

It is interesting to note that the participants have all embraced the need to go Bio gel and cook stove as a sustainable option to the conventional cooking methods. In addition, the women shared great stories about learning and support to be a part of promoting green energy.

2.0 OBJECIVES OF TRAINING:                          

The specific objectives of the training are:

  • Conduct a demonstration of the uses of the floating weeds otherwise known as Water Hyacinth.
  • Introduce the product gel processed from the floating weeds and the associated cook stove.
  • Conduct a sample baseline to determine the challenges faced with the use of firewood and how a cleaner and greener option could work better.
  • Analyse the outcome of the baseline survey.
  • Create the awareness and opportunities for enterprise development to increase the income generating capacity of the women.

It is interesting to note that these objectives were adequately met at the end of the training, given the level of participation and inputs of the participants.
